The world has lost one of its most resilient and beloved television stars far too soon.
Hayden Panettiere, whose portrayal of Claire Bennet in NBC’s groundbreaking science fiction drama Heroes made her a global star and whose later work in ABC’s Nashville showcased her as a genuine acting and musical talent, has died at the age of 36.
Her death was confirmed Sunday, August 16, in a statement from her representative shared with PEOPLE magazine on behalf of her father, Alan Panettiere. The cause of death was not immediately disclosed.
“It is with profound sadness that we share the tragic passing of our beloved Hayden,” her father said. “She was an incredible light and a force of nature who brought immeasurable love and joy to all who knew her — and to the millions who watched her onscreen.”
A Career That Began in Childhood
Panettiere was born on August 21, 1989, just five days before her death at 36, and began her professional acting career as a child in the 1990s, appearing on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live and CBS’s Guiding Light before transitioning to film.
At just nine years old, she voiced Princess Dot in Pixar’s A Bug’s Life, one of the most celebrated animated films of its era. Her film breakthrough came in 2000 with Remember the Titans, where she played Sheryl Yoast, the football-obsessed daughter of assistant coach Bill Yoast, alongside Will Patton.
But it was 2006 that changed everything. Cast as Claire Bennet in NBC’s Heroes, Panettiere’s portrayal of the indestructible high school cheerleader with remarkable healing abilities became one of the defining television performances of the late 2000s. The show’s iconic tagline, “Save the cheerleader, save the world,” became inseparable from her face and her talent.
Nashville, Scream and a Final Chapter
After Heroes concluded in 2010, Panettiere continued building a remarkable body of work. She starred in Scream 4 in 2011 and reprised her fan-favorite role as Kirby Reed in Scream 6 in 2023.
Her other defining television role came in Nashville, ABC’s acclaimed musical drama that ran for six seasons from 2012 to 2018, where she starred alongside Connie Britton and combined her acting with a genuine music career, recording songs as part of the series.
Her final film, Sleepwalker, was released in January 2026.
A Life of Extraordinary Personal Courage
Away from the screen, Panettiere demonstrated a different kind of courage that earned deep respect from audiences who followed her personal journey.
In a candid 2022 interview with PEOPLE, she spoke publicly about her battles with alcohol and opioid addiction and postpartum depression. She described recovery as a long and painful process undertaken with hard-won honesty.
She also endured the devastating loss of her younger brother, actor Jansen Panettiere, who died in 2023 at just 28 from complications associated with an enlarged heart.
“He was my only sibling, and it was my job to protect him. When I lost him, I felt like I lost half of my soul,” she said.
Earlier this year, she released her memoir, This Is Me: A Reckoning, a deeply personal account of childhood fame, addiction, motherhood, loss, and rebuilding. In what was reported as her final interview, she described herself as a work in progress, taking life one day at a time.
She is survived by her parents and her daughter Kaya Evdokia Klitschko, 11, who lives in Europe with her father, former heavyweight boxing champion Wladimir Klitschko.
Hayden Panettiere was 36. She deserved so many more years.
