Trump threatens to destroy Iranian boats challenging US blockade as Tehran calls it illegal, raising fears of escalation despite Pakistan-led efforts to sustain fragile diplomacy.

US President Donald Trump issued a stark warning that any Iranian vessels approaching the American naval blockade would be “immediately eliminated,” sharply escalating tensions in the Gulf despite ongoing diplomatic efforts.
The United States has moved to enforce a sweeping maritime blockade around Iranian ports linked to the strategic Strait of Hormuz, applying it to all ships entering or leaving Iranian harbours.
In a strongly worded statement, Trump claimed that much of Iran’s naval capacity had already been destroyed and warned that any remaining “fast attack boats” would face immediate destruction if they challenged the blockade.
The move follows failed negotiations held in Islamabad, where a US delegation led by Vice President JD Vance was unable to secure a breakthrough with Iranian officials. Despite this, Pakistan and Qatar continue to push for dialogue, with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif confirming that a fragile ceasefire remains in place.
Iran has fiercely condemned the blockade, calling it a “grave violation” of sovereignty and international law. In a letter to the United Nations, Tehran warned that the move threatens global peace and could trigger wider instability.
Iranian officials also cautioned that if their ports are threatened, regional waterways would no longer remain secure, signaling the risk of retaliation across the Gulf.
The crisis has drawn international concern. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urged all sides to respect freedom of navigation, while China and several European nations warned against further escalation.
Oil markets reacted swiftly, with prices jumping as fears grew that the standoff could disrupt a major portion of global energy supplies flowing through Hormuz.
Analysts say Washington’s approach — combining military pressure with signals of negotiation — reflects a high-risk strategy aimed at forcing Iran back to the table.
However, with threats intensifying and diplomacy under strain, the situation appears increasingly volatile, raising concerns that the blockade could mark not just pressure tactics, but a dangerous step toward renewed conflict.
