A violent clash occurred outside South Hall, Broadway in West London on the night of August 15th, involving Indian men celebrating Independence Day and a small group of pro-Khalistan British Sikhs who chose not to participate in the celebrations.
The confrontation resulted in two Indian men sustaining serious injuries and receiving hospital treatment. The incident unfolded as hundreds of Indian men gathered to express their support for India, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and the RSS. They were waving Indian flags and chanting slogans when they encountered a group of approximately five Sikhs carrying Khalistan flags.
The Indian crowd was also shouting slogans in support of extremist Hindu groups like the RSS and BJP. Attempts were made to involve the Sikhs in the celebrations, but they declined, leading to tensions escalating.
Video footage captured the moment when the situation turned violent. The Indian crowd advanced towards the Sikhs despite the presence of police officers attempting to maintain order. The Indian group berated the Sikhs, hoping to provoke a reaction, and an altercation broke out. The Sikh men were chased and assaulted, with one using his Kirpan (a ceremonial Sikh dagger) in self-defense. Two Sikh men were severely beaten and had to be hospitalized.
According to an eyewitness, the conflict ignited when both groups displayed their flags and escalated when the Indian supporters pushed forward despite police warnings. The violent encounter led to the police intervening to stop the assault.
A spokesperson from Scotland Yard confirmed that the clash occurred on India’s Independence Day. One individual was arrested on suspicion of affray. The police reported that two men in their 30s sustained knife injuries but were in stable condition. A female police officer also suffered a minor cut while detaining the suspect but did not require hospital treatment.
Chief Superintendent Sean Wilson, responsible for policing in Ealing, acknowledged the community’s concern and assured that an investigation was underway. He commended the officers’ bravery in responding swiftly to the altercation and apprehending a knife-wielding suspect. A Section 35 Dispersal Order was authorized by the police in response to the incident.
The clash outside South Hall raised concerns about potential communal clashes, recalling a similar incident in Leicester the previous year when violence erupted between a Hindutva mob and local Muslims, resulting in several days of unrest. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining peace and understanding within diverse communities.
