In a groundbreaking study published on November 6th in Cell Reports Physical Science, a novel machine-learning tool is revealed to have the extraordinary ability to identify AI-generated papers written by the chatbot ChatGPT. Desaire’s ChatGPT Detector relies on a machine learning approach that scrutinizes 20 different features of writing style. These include variations in sentence lengths and the frequency of specific words and punctuation marks. By examining these features, the tool determines whether a piece of text was authored by an academic scientist or generated by ChatGPT.
To train the ChatGPT Detector, the research team used introductory sections from papers in ten chemistry journals published by the American Chemical Society. These sections were chosen because ChatGPT could readily produce them with access to background literature.
When tested, the ChatGPT Detector demonstrated remarkable accuracy. It correctly identified sections written by ChatGPT-3.5 with 100% accuracy when based on paper titles.
