China’s Xiaomi has unveiled its new SkyNomad sport utility vehicle (SUV) series, expanding its electric vehicle portfolio into the growing family SUV segment as the technology company looks to accelerate sales ahead of its planned European market debut next year.
The new lineup, introduced in Beijing on Thursday, marks Xiaomi’s latest effort to strengthen its position in China’s fiercely competitive electric vehicle market, where slowing consumer demand and intense price competition have weighed on manufacturers.
Unlike Xiaomi’s SU7 sedan and YU7 SUV, which emphasize performance and driving dynamics, the SkyNomad range has been designed around spacious interiors, flexible seating arrangements and family-oriented features.
Xiaomi describes the new lineup as an “intelligent, reconfigurable, large-space SUV” built for customers seeking greater practicality without sacrificing advanced technology.
Leading the range is the SkyNomad N90 Max, a seven-seat extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) that combines a 76-kilowatt-hour battery with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine acting as a range extender, along with a 60-liter fuel tank.
The company said the flagship model can travel up to 1,705 kilometers (1,059 miles) on a full battery and fuel tank, making it one of the longest-range vehicles in its class.
Extended-range electric vehicles are powered primarily by electric motors, while the onboard gasoline engine generates electricity to recharge the battery or maintain power when needed, reducing range anxiety during long-distance travel.
Speaking at the launch event, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said the company wanted to rethink how large SUVs serve modern families.
“Six seats are not enough for families. If we compare a vehicle to a house, we can freely arrange our space and decorate,” Lei said.
The N90 Max is priced at 299,900 yuan (about $44,400) and is built on Xiaomi’s new Kunlun architecture, a vehicle platform developed specifically for larger SUVs with adaptable cabin layouts.
The company said pre-orders opened immediately following the launch, with customer deliveries scheduled to begin in September.
The SkyNomad launch comes as Xiaomi seeks to boost electric vehicle deliveries after first-half sales reached only about one-third of its annual target. The company’s automotive business has become an increasingly important growth driver alongside its smartphones, smart home appliances and connected devices.
Industry analysts say the family SUV segment represents one of China’s fastest-growing vehicle categories, offering Xiaomi an opportunity to diversify beyond performance-focused electric models while appealing to buyers seeking spacious, technology-rich vehicles.
The new SUV lineup also supports Xiaomi’s broader international ambitions, with the company preparing to enter European markets next year as it expands its presence beyond China.
As competition intensifies among Chinese automakers, Xiaomi is betting that long driving range, flexible interiors and smart connectivity will help the SkyNomad stand out in one of the world’s most crowded EV markets.
