Lahore – Pakistan: In a dramatic escalation of tensions between two nuclear-armed neighbors, India launched overnight airstrikes on six sites inside Pakistan, reportedly targeting what it claimed were militant training camps. The strikes come in the wake of a recent deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir, which New Delhi has blamed on Pakistan-based elements.
Pakistan responded swiftly, claiming it shot down five Indian fighter jets that violated its airspace in retaliation for the late-night raids. Pakistani defense sources confirmed that air defense systems were activated in multiple sectors near the Line of Control (LoC), with one aircraft reportedly falling inside Pakistani territory.
A Dangerous Escalation
This marks one of the most serious military confrontations between the two countries in recent years. While border skirmishes and ceasefire violations have been frequent, full-scale aerial strikes represent a significant intensification of conflict.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has yet to confirm the number of aircraft deployed officially, but described the strikes as “preemptive and intelligence-led” operations against “terror infrastructure.”
Pakistan’s Prime Minister convened an emergency session of the National Security Committee (NSC) early this morning, warning that Pakistan “will not tolerate aggression” and “reserves the right to respond decisively.”
Global Reactions Begin to Pour In
World leaders have begun reacting to the crisis, urging restraint and immediate de-escalation:
-
U.S. State Department: Called for “calm and direct communication” between India and Pakistan to avoid further escalation.
-
United Nations: Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed “deep concern” and urged both sides to “exercise maximum restraint.”
-
China: Beijing, a key ally of Pakistan, urged both countries to resolve differences through dialogue, warning that “misjudgment could have catastrophic consequences.”
-
European Union: Issued a joint statement urging both nations to avoid “further provocation” and offered mediation support if needed.
Background: The Kashmir Flashpoint
Tensions have been steadily rising since a deadly attack in Indian-administered Kashmir last week, which killed dozens of Indian security personnel. India blamed the attack on Pakistan-based groups, a claim Islamabad has vehemently denied.
The Kashmir region remains a deeply contested territory, with both countries claiming it in full but controlling it in parts. Several wars and countless military standoffs have erupted over the region since 1947.
Analysts warn that both countries now stand at a dangerous crossroads. With military posturing at its peak and nationalist sentiment surging, the chances of further escalation cannot be ruled out unless diplomatic intervention occurs immediately.
