The annual convention of the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America — one of the largest organizations representing Pakistani-origin doctors in North America — has sparked debate and criticism after many attendees claimed the event drifted away from its core purpose of healthcare, research, and professional development.
APPNA, which represents nearly 25,000 physicians across the United States and Canada, has traditionally been viewed as a prestigious platform for discussing medical innovation, healthcare challenges, community welfare, and new scientific developments. However, this year’s convention drew criticism from several attendees who felt the focus had shifted toward politics, entertainment, and commercial activities.
Among the strongest reactions came from attendee Sohail Zafar Cheema, who described the event as “disorganized” and questioned whether the convention had become more of a commercial marketplace than a serious professional gathering.
According to Cheema, hundreds of vendors participated in the event, with expensive clothing and lifestyle stalls attracting significant attention. Critics argued that while cultural and commercial stalls can be part of such conventions, they should not overshadow the primary mission of healthcare awareness, medical networking, and research discussions.
The event also became politically controversial after attendees noticed that former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s image appeared allegedly defaced in a collage featuring prominent Pakistani personalities during the opening ceremony.
The move triggered criticism even from some attendees who do not politically support Imran Khan. Many questioned why APPNA, a professional medical organization operating in North America, appeared to be reflecting Pakistan’s deeply polarized political environment.
Questions were also raised over the presence of Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal at the convention, with critics asking whether the event was gradually becoming a political platform instead of remaining focused on healthcare and medical advancement.
Several attendees also expressed surprise over the participation of social media influencers, TikTok personalities, and entertainers from Pakistan, arguing that celebrity culture appeared to overshadow meaningful discussions on public health, research, and innovation.
Critics say APPNA should remain committed to democratic values, professional neutrality, and the advancement of healthcare issues affecting Pakistani communities worldwide rather than becoming entangled in political narratives or establishment-driven controversies.
Despite the criticism, supporters of the convention defended the inclusion of cultural activities and community engagement, saying such events help strengthen connections among overseas Pakistanis.
However, the controversy has triggered a larger debate within the Pakistani-American medical community about APPNA’s future direction and whether the organization is losing focus on the professional and healthcare-centered objectives it was originally created to serve.
