Despite warnings of a potential new wave of COVID-19 driven by the XBB variants, Chinese health authorities maintain that the situation remains stable and under control. According to respected respiratory disease specialist Zhong Nanshan, modelling suggests that a new wave began in April, with an estimated 40 million infections per week in May. Dr. Zhong anticipates the peak of the wave to occur in June, with approximately 65 million new cases per week.
Dr. Zhong also revealed that preliminary approval has been given for two new XBB-specific vaccines, which are expected to be released soon. This wave marks the second since China abandoned its strict policy of COVID-zero in December, which had been successful in suppressing the virus for nearly three years through extensive lockdowns and frequent testing.
While there has been an increase in patients at fever clinics since the end of April, Wang Liping, a research fellow with the Chinese Center for Disease Control (CDC), states that the overall number is still significantly lower than the previous wave’s peak. Most patients are experiencing mild symptoms, and the situation of epidemic prevention and control across the country is deemed stable and controllable.
Monitoring conducted by the CDC has identified the three most common subvariants in China to be the same as the internationally recognized Omicron XBB variants. Dr. Chen Cao expects XBB variant infections to increase due to imported mutant variants and the declining antibody levels in the population.
While the emergence of another COVID-19 wave is not surprising, the exact number of infections cannot be determined due to the lack of a comprehensive testing system. Professor George Liu from Latrobe University suggests focusing on vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and those with existing health conditions, to ensure their well-being during the wave.
Chinese residents appear relatively relaxed about the situation, with many still wearing masks as a precautionary measure. There is currently no evidence to support the emergence of a more dangerous COVID-19 variant during the current wave. Despite the relaxed approach, people continue to take precautions and maintain their immunity through proper nutrition and health practices.
