Fashion mogul convicted of four counts of sexual assault

Peter Nygard, a renowned former Canadian fashion mogul was found guilty of four counts of sexual abuse by a Toronto jury on Sunday, according to CBC News.

Nygard, 82, underwent trial in the Ontario Superior Court, facing accusations of five counts of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement related to incidents spanning from the 1980s to the mid-2000s.

He was acquitted of a fifth count of sexual assault and one count of forcible confinement. Requests for comments from Nygard’s lawyer remain unanswered.

During the six-week trial, the court heard testimony from five complainants who alleged that between the late 1980s and approximately 2005, Nygard assaulted them in the private bedroom suite of his downtown Toronto office building, as reported by CBC News.

Nygard was arrested by Canadian police in late 2020 at the behest of the United States, where he faced accusations of using his businesses to entice women and girls for sexual purposes, involving himself and his associates. Toronto police filed their charges about a year later.

Additionally, Nygard is confronted with charges of sexual assault and forcible confinement in Manitoba and Quebec. He is contesting extradition to the U.S., where he faces charges in New York, including conspiracy to commit racketeering, transportation of a minor for the purpose of prostitution, and sex trafficking through force, fraud, or coercion, as per CBC News.

Born in Finland, Nygard was raised in Manitoba, eventually overseeing his eponymous clothing companies and ascending to become one of Canada’s wealthiest individuals.
