Jos Buttler, the English captain calls England’s shock defeat by Afghanistan as ‘a significant setback’, has not shaken his belief that they can still make it to the World Cup semi-finals, as he stated, “absolutely.”
Jos Buttler has described their unexpected defeat to Afghanistan as a ‘big blow.’ after their post-match presser of the CWC2023 big match. This loss, the second in three games, significantly challenges their chances of advancing beyond the group stage in the World Cup.
England may need to win five of their remaining six games, including matches against India, South Africa, Pakistan, and Australia, to secure a semi-final spot.
Buttler emphasized the importance of maintaining belief, character, and resilience in the face of adversity.
Having decided to bowl first, England were quickly put under pressure as Afghanistan’s openers put on 114 for the first wicket in just 16.4 overs with Rahmanullah Gubraz in destructive form.

Despite a mid-innings fightback that helped restrict Afghanistan to 284, a series of tame dismissals soon put Buttler’s side under pressure and, with spinners Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi impressing, they never recovered.
The match saw England’s bowler Chris Woakes struggle, continuing his challenging start to the tournament. However, Buttler remained confident in Woakes’ capabilities, acknowledging his history of excellence and expressing continued support for the experienced player.
