A tragic incident occurred in Malaysia’s central Selangor state on Thursday when a light plane crashed into a street, resulting in the loss of eight lives on board and two motorists on the ground, as reported by the local police chief.
Mohamad Iqbal Ibrahim, speaking to AFP, conveyed the grim news that at least 10 individuals lost their lives in the plane crash. Among the victims were eight aboard the aircraft and two passing motorists – one in a car and another on a motorcycle.
Police confirmed that Johari Harun, a state assemblyman responsible for housing and the environment in central Pahang state, was among the plane passengers who tragically lost their lives.
According to Malaysia’s civil aviation authority, the aircraft carried six passengers and two flight crew members when it crashed. However, the authority refrained from confirming any casualties.
The plane had taken off from Langkawi, a resort island in the north, and was en route to Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport, situated west of the capital Kuala Lumpur, stated Norazman Mahmud, chief of the civil aviation authority. He noted that no distress call had been made.
The Air Accident Investigation Bureau will undertake an investigation into the crash, Mahmud added.
An eyewitness, Mohamad Syahmie Mohamad Hashim, a former member of the Malaysian air force, recounted observing the plane’s erratic flight pattern before hearing a loud explosion. He shared the harrowing experience of seeing the remains of the aircraft and a human body on fire at the crash site.
Reports from other witnesses indicated that the Beechcraft Model 390 burst into flames upon impact in Elmina Estate near the suburb of Shah Alam. The area houses a mix of residential properties and factories, and witnesses noted an accompanying explosion.
