Italian Military Helicopter Crashes in Bosnia, Killing Four and Injuring 11

A European Union peacekeeping mission is operating in Bosnia and Herzegovina to maintain peace and stability, with military personnel from various countries participating. During the mission, an Italian military helicopter crashed, killing four people and injuring 11 others.

According to Reuters, the accident occurred on Thursday. Italy’s Ministry of Defence said that a CH-47 helicopter was carrying a total of 15 people when it crashed. Four people lost their lives, while 11 others sustained injuries.

The ministry confirmed that those killed included two Italian Army personnel and two members of the Italian Red Cross Volunteer Military Corps. The injured were reported to be in stable condition and were receiving medical treatment.

According to Italy’s ANSA news agency, the helicopter crashed in the village of Goris, in Bosnia’s Brčko District. Images broadcast by local media showed the military transport helicopter lying upside down on the ground, with its wreckage scattered across several pieces.

Italian Defence Minister Guido Crosetto expressed deep sorrow over the accident and offered condolences to the families of those killed. He said his thoughts were first and foremost with the families who had lost their loved ones.

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also expressed solidarity with the victims, their families and everyone involved in the peacekeeping mission in a message posted on the social media platform X.

According to Italy’s Ministry of Defence, the helicopter was part of Operation Althea, conducted under the European Union Force (EUFOR). The mission is responsible for overseeing the implementation of the Dayton Peace Agreement, which was aimed at maintaining peace in Bosnia and Herzegovina following the end of the war.

The Ministry of Defence said the cause of the crash remains unknown. An investigation is underway to determine the circumstances and reasons behind the helicopter accident.
