HBO is reviving Girls for five new episodes in 2027, bringing Lena Dunham and the original cast back together a decade after the finale.
HBO’s comedy series Girls is returning for a limited five-episode run, reuniting its original cast ten years after the show concluded its sixth and final season.
Creator Lena Dunham will reprise her role alongside Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke and Zosia Mamet, bringing the four central characters back to television. Andrew Rannells is also confirmed to return, while Judd Apatow will serve as an executive producer on the upcoming series.
Production is scheduled to begin in summer 2027, marking a decade since the original series finale aired in April 2017. The announcement was made on Tuesday through a social media video featuring Dunham and her former co-stars.
During the video, Dunham jokingly questioned whether the series could still be called Girls, given how much older the characters and actors have become. She asked her co-stars whether they would be available the following summer, and they agreed to participate, with Rannells also joining the reunion.
In a statement accompanying the announcement, Dunham explained that the team had always wanted a compelling story before considering a return to the series.
She said she had missed the characters but had struggled to imagine their lives in the present day. The idea eventually came to her around her fortieth birthday, when she began envisioning new stories for the group.
Dunham described the reunion as an opportunity to revisit a project that changed her life, bringing a greater sense of perspective, gratitude and understanding to the characters. She also expressed appreciation for HBO and the audiences who continue to discover the original series.
However, not everyone from the original creative team will return. Jenni Konner, who served as an executive producer and co-showrunner alongside Dunham, will not be involved in the upcoming project.
The participation of several other familiar cast members remains uncertain. Adam Driver, Christopher Abbott and Alex Karpovsky have not been confirmed for the limited run.
First premiered in 2012, Girls followed four young women navigating relationships, careers, friendships and personal challenges in New York City. The series became known for its candid portrayal of millennial adulthood and helped establish Dunham as a prominent television creator.
The upcoming five episodes are expected to revisit the characters as they navigate life a decade after the original finale. HBO has not yet announced a release date or disclosed specific details about the reunion’s storyline.
