Goa Police have registered an Unnatural Death case following the death of veteran Bollywood actor Nana Patekar, who passed away at his residence in Goa on Wednesday morning. The actor was 75.
The Panaji Police filed the case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) on Thursday, a day after Patekar breathed his last. An inquiry into the matter is ongoing, according to ANI.
Patekar died following a cardiac arrest at his Goa home on October 8. The registration of an Unnatural Death case is standard legal procedure in India whenever a death occurs outside a hospital setting, and does not in itself indicate foul play. Authorities have not suggested any suspicious circumstances at this stage.
The actor, widely regarded as one of Hindi cinema’s most intense and versatile performers, had built a career spanning four decades. Known for landmark films including Parinda, Krantiveer and Ab Tak Chhappan, Patekar was celebrated for roles that demanded raw authenticity and brought an uncompromising honesty to the screen that few of his contemporaries could match.
Beyond cinema, he was known for his philanthropic work, particularly through Naam Foundation, which provided relief to drought-affected farmers across Maharashtra, a cause he championed publicly and persistently for years.
The Indian film industry and fans across South Asia have been in mourning since news of his passing broke on Wednesday. Official condolence statements have poured in from across Bollywood and beyond.
An inquiry by Goa Police is ongoing. Further details are expected as the investigation proceeds.
