Bangladesh has agreed to purchase additional Boeing aircraft from the United States, expanding its multibillion-dollar aviation commitment beyond an earlier plan to acquire 25 planes, according to a senior US official.
Sergio Gor, US President Donald Trump’s special envoy for South and Central Asia and ambassador to India, announced the latest commitment in a post on X on Sunday. He said Bangladesh had pledged to spend billions of dollars on more Boeing aircraft, significantly increasing its initial order.
The number of additional aircraft and the total value of the new commitment were not disclosed. Details on the aircraft models, financing arrangements and delivery schedules also remain unclear.
“This week, President Trump and the Prime Minister of Bangladesh made another incredible deal,” Gor wrote, saying Bangladesh had agreed to spend billions of dollars on additional Boeing aircraft.
The latest pledge comes on top of Bangladesh’s previously announced commitment to purchase 25 Boeing aircraft under a tariff agreement with the United States.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines signed a final agreement with Boeing on May 1 to purchase 14 aircraft at an estimated cost of $3.7 billion, according to the previously announced deal. The broader procurement programme has become an important part of growing commercial relations between Dhaka and Washington.
The fresh announcement suggests Bangladesh’s total Boeing purchases could now exceed the previously committed 25 aircraft, potentially pushing the overall value of its planned US aircraft procurement significantly higher.
However, Bangladesh has yet to provide details on how many additional planes it intends to acquire or how the purchases will be financed.
The Boeing agreements have emerged as a major component of Bangladesh-US economic relations following negotiations between Dhaka and Washington over tariffs. Large aircraft purchases are also closely watched because of their potential impact on trade balances and long-term commercial partnerships.
For Bangladesh, the expanded commitment could support the modernization and future growth of its aviation sector, particularly as demand for air travel increases across South Asia.
For Boeing and the United States, the prospective deal represents another major commercial commitment involving a strategic South Asian partner.
