Clash Erupts at Sarhad University Campus

A tense confrontation at Sarhad University’s Islamabad (Rawat) campus on Monday escalated when a serving Pakistan Army officer fired shots into the air during a student protest. Lieutenant Colonel Asfandyar Wali has been taken into custody and faces a military inquiry.

How the Dispute Began

The incident is rooted in an earlier conflict within the university. Dr. Aina, Head of Student Affairs and wife of the officer, had previously filed complaints against Dr. Jadoon Khan, the former Head of Department. Female students and staff had alleged harassment by Dr. Jadoon. Following an internal inquiry, he was suspended and Dr. Aina was given additional charge.

According to one account, Dr. Jadoon later entered Dr. Aina’s office, verbally abused her, and threatened her. She approached the police, but the matter was temporarily settled after the vice principal intervened and Dr. Jadoon issued a written apology.

Protest and Escalation

On Monday, students staged a protest demanding Dr. Jadoon’s reinstatement and raising other campus issues. Dr. Aina went to speak with the protesters. The exchange turned heated. She then contacted her husband.

Lt Col Wali arrived at the campus in uniform. Videos circulating online show him confronting students, using a stick, and later drawing his service pistol. As the crowd surrounded him and a physical scuffle broke out, he fired shots into the air. His uniform was reportedly torn during the altercation. Police later arrived and took control of the situation.

Conflicting Narratives

Supporters of the officer claim he acted in self-defence after students verbally abused and physically threatened his wife. They argue any husband would react strongly in such circumstances.

Student accounts and some reports describe the officer’s arrival and use of force as unprovoked aggression on a civilian campus. They demand strict action against him.

Official Response

The Pakistan Army has placed the officer under arrest and ordered a formal inquiry under military law. Further action will depend on the findings of the investigation. Police are also examining the sequence of events.

The episode has sparked wider debate about the presence of armed military personnel on university campuses and the proper channels for resolving internal administrative disputes.
