Fresh Fighting in Badakhshan

Heavy clashes have intensified in Afghanistan’s northeastern Badakhshan province, bordering Pakistan’s Lower Chitral district, as the anti-Taliban Afghanistan Freedom Front (AFF) claims to have inflicted significant losses on Taliban forces. The group says fighting has continued for several days in the strategically important Zebak district.

According to AFF statements shared on social media, its fighters launched attacks on Taliban positions and targeted a military convoy travelling from Kabul to Badakhshan. The group claimed seven Taliban fighters were killed and six others wounded in a rocket strike, while also alleging it shot down two Taliban drones during recent operations.

Conflicting Claims from Both Sides

The Taliban administration has not publicly confirmed AFF’s battlefield claims. However, senior Taliban military officials insist government forces remain in full control of the area and have successfully repelled attacks by what they describe as “rebel groups.”

Taliban Chief of General Staff Fasihuddin Fitrat, who recently visited the conflict zone, stated that antigovernmental fighters suffered heavy casualties and retreated after facing strong resistance. He also claimed some militants fled toward Pakistan’s Chitral region but said Taliban forces did not pursue them across the border.

So far, no independent organization has verified the casualty figures or territorial claims made by either side.

Who Is the Afghanistan Freedom Front?

The Afghanistan Freedom Front is one of the country’s most prominent armed groups opposing Taliban rule. It is largely composed of former Afghan National Defense and Security Forces personnel and is led by former Afghan army chief General Yasin Zia.

Since the Taliban returned to power in 2021, the AFF has claimed responsibility for numerous attacks on Taliban security installations across several provinces. The group says it seeks to challenge Taliban control through coordinated guerrilla operations.

Strategic Importance of Badakhshan

Badakhshan holds major strategic value due to its borders with Pakistan, China, and Tajikistan. Security analysts believe continued instability in the province could have wider regional implications, particularly because of its proximity to Pakistan.

The latest clashes highlight the ongoing security challenges facing Afghanistan, where armed resistance groups continue to confront Taliban forces despite the administration’s repeated assertions that peace and stability have been restored across the country. The situation remains fluid as both sides continue issuing conflicting statements while independent verification remains limited.
