Pakistan’s devout Muslim community, which sends hundreds of thousands of Umrah pilgrims to Saudi Arabia every year, has received one of the best travel news stories in recent memory.
Saudi Arabia has officially launched a one-year multiple-entry Umrah visa, allowing eligible pilgrims to visit the Kingdom multiple times over a 12-month period with a combined maximum stay of 90 days. For Pakistani businessmen, professionals, and families who travel for Umrah multiple times a year, this eliminates the recurring cost, paperwork, and waiting time of applying for a fresh visa before every visit.
What the new visa offers
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah announced the visa on Monday, describing it as part of Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 Pilgrim Experience Programme. The key features are straightforward and highly practical.
The visa remains valid for 365 days from the date of issuance and permits unlimited entries into Saudi Arabia within that period. It automatically deactivates when a pilgrim leaves Saudi Arabia and reactivates for future trips once all regulatory requirements are fulfilled. The cumulative stay across all visits cannot exceed 90 days within the visa’s validity period.
How to apply and what is required
Before each visit, pilgrims must purchase an approved service package through Nusuk, Saudi Arabia’s official digital platform for Umrah services. The duration of the selected package must not exceed the remaining days on the visa. Pilgrims must also obtain an Umrah permit through the Nusuk mobile application before traveling to the Kingdom.
One important condition: the visa cannot be used during the annual Hajj season, which is subject to separate pilgrimage regulations.
Why this matters for Pakistani pilgrims
Pakistan is one of the world’s largest sources of Umrah pilgrims. Every year, hundreds of thousands of Pakistanis travel to Makkah and Madinah for Umrah, with a significant portion of the business community and affluent families making multiple trips annually during Ramadan, school holidays, and other periods.
Previously, each Umrah trip required a separate visa application, the involvement of a travel agent, documentation, and waiting time. For a Pakistani businessman who travels for Umrah three or four times a year, this was a recurring administrative burden and expense.
The new one-year multiple-entry visa removes that burden entirely. One application, one visa, multiple visits throughout the year, all managed digitally through the Nusuk platform without requiring an intermediary travel agent for the visa process itself.
Part of Saudi Arabia’s bigger Vision 2030 plan
The Ministry of Hajj and Umrah described the initiative as directly aligned with Vision 2030 goals of facilitating arrival, enriching the pilgrim experience, and improving service efficiency. Saudi Arabia has invested heavily in expanding pilgrimage infrastructure, digital services, and transportation networks to welcome increasing numbers of Muslim visitors while diversifying its economy beyond oil.
The new visa follows a series of recent reforms, including allowing GCC citizens and residents to perform Umrah year-round and expanding digital services through Nusuk, enabling international pilgrims to book visas, accommodation, and transportation entirely online.
