A powerful Typhoon Bavi battered Japan’s southern islands on Saturday, bringing torrential rain, destructive winds, and widespread disruption, while prompting emergency preparations in neighboring Taiwan amid fears of flooding and landslides.
According to reports, Okinawa Prefecture’s Sakishima Islands, particularly Ishigaki Island, experienced severe weather conditions as heavy rain and strong winds swept across the region. Streets were left nearly deserted, with debris blown through the air and only a handful of vehicles venturing onto the roads. Boats anchored in local harbors were rocked by powerful waves and rough seas.
The Japan Meteorological Agency reported sustained winds of 144 km/h near the storm’s center, with gusts expected to reach 198 km/h. Authorities urged residents to remain indoors and stay alert as the typhoon continued its path.
The severe weather caused major travel disruptions, with all flights to and from Ishigaki suspended throughout the day. Airlines canceled a total of 345 flights, while more than 24,000 households across Okinawa were left without electricity.
Meanwhile, Taiwan intensified precautionary measures as Typhoon Bavi moved closer. Although meteorologists said the storm is not expected to make a direct landfall, officials evacuated more than 14,000 people from vulnerable mountainous regions due to the risk of flooding and landslides. Some areas are forecast to receive up to one meter of rainfall.
The adverse weather also disrupted air travel in Taiwan, where 920 international flights and all 280 domestic flights were canceled as authorities prioritized public safety. Emergency agencies in both Japan and Taiwan remain on high alert as the storm continues to move through the region.
