Switzerland reached the FIFA World Cup quarterfinals for the first time since 1954 after beating Colombia 4-3 on penalties following a 0-0 draw in their last 16 match.
The game remained goalless after extra time, with both teams creating chances but failing to find the breakthrough. Colombia came closest to winning in the closing moments of added time, but they could not take their opportunity, forcing the match into a penalty shootout.
In the shootout, Ruben Vargas scored the winning penalty to send Switzerland through and break Colombian hearts. The Swiss players celebrated a famous victory as they secured a place in the last eight of the tournament.
Switzerland will now face defending champions Argentina, led by Lionel Messi, in what promises to be one of the biggest matches of the tournament.
Earlier in the day, Argentina produced a remarkable comeback to beat Egypt 3-2. The defending champions were two goals behind before scoring three late goals, including an equalizer from Messi and a stoppage time winner from Enzo Fernandez, to keep their World Cup title defense alive.
The quarterfinal between Switzerland and Argentina will be a battle between a confident Swiss side making history and an Argentine team inspired by Messi as they continue their chase for another World Cup crown.
