The death toll from the earthquakes that struck Venezuela on June 24 has risen to 2,595, while the number of injured has exceeded 12,400, according to Interim President Delcy Rodríguez.
Rodríguez said that search and rescue operations are still ongoing and that the government has not ended its relief efforts. She said that rescue teams continue their operations in the affected areas as part of the government’s ongoing emergency response.
She said the state of La Guaira has been the worst-affected area, where the collapse of government buildings resulted in the deaths of several regional government officials. According to the interim president, a total of 189 buildings across the country have been completely destroyed as a result of the earthquakes.
Rodríguez also announced that a $200 million special reconstruction fund is being established with the cooperation of the International Monetary Fund (IMF). She said the IMF and the World Bank have offered Venezuela financial assistance and loans. According to her, the funds will be used to rebuild homes, restore infrastructure, and rehabilitate other damaged facilities affected by the disaster.
Authorities have not released an official number of missing persons. However, unofficial online lists indicate that around 38,500 people remain missing. Search and rescue operations are continuing as authorities work to locate those who are still unaccounted for, while relief efforts remain in progress across the affected regions.
