Authorities have widened the investigation into the escape of 14 undertrial prisoners from Adiala Jail following their court appearance. According to police sources, investigators have begun examining the mobile phone data and call records of the police personnel taken into custody as part of the inquiry.
The investigation is also focusing on whether the prisoners were re-handcuffed after meeting visitors during their appearance at Kahuta court. In addition, officers assigned to the prison transport vehicle and armed with government-issued weapons are being questioned.
Officials are conducting a detailed review of whether the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for escorting high-risk undertrial prisoners to court were properly followed or if any negligence contributed to the escape.
Following the incident, Punjab Inspector General of Police Rao Abdul Karim took immediate notice and ordered action against those found responsible.
SP Headquarters Mudassar Iqbal was removed from his position and directed to report to Lahore, while DSP Headquarters Imtiaz Ahmed was suspended with immediate effect.
The Punjab IGP has also sought a detailed report from Rawalpindi Region RPO Babar Sarfraz as the investigation continues to determine the circumstances behind the prisoners’ escape.
