The Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has suspended Geo News’s license and transmission for 15 days over allegations that the channel aired objectionable religious content during a special Muharram transmission.
In an official notification issued on Saturday, PEMRA stated that Geo News broadcast a program titled “Safar-e-Ishq” during its Muharram 10 transmission in which certain “religious visualizations” were shown.
According to the regulator, the content raised serious regulatory concerns and was considered capable of harming viewers’ religious sentiments while also posing risks to religious harmony and public order.
PEMRA said the content could potentially create “disturbance to public peace, tranquility, and law and order.”
“The license issued to M/s Independent Media Corporation (Pvt.) Ltd. for Geo News is suspended for a period of fifteen (15) days with immediate effect,” the authority said in its order dated June 27.
The regulator further directed all satellite operators, cable networks, and distribution service licensees to immediately suspend Geo News transmission across all platforms for the duration of the ban.
The development has sparked fresh debate within Pakistan’s media industry regarding editorial boundaries during religious programming and the growing scrutiny of television content by regulators.
PEMRA has not publicly shared specific details regarding the exact visual content objected to in the Muharram transmission.
Geo News had not issued a detailed public response immediately after the suspension order was announced.
The decision comes during the sensitive Muharram period, when Pakistani media outlets traditionally air extensive religious coverage, processions, and historical programming linked to Ashura commemorations.
Media analysts believe the suspension could trigger wider discussions around religious sensitivities, censorship, editorial responsibility, and freedom of broadcast in Pakistan’s television industry.
