LAHORE: In a landmark move to modernize urban transportation, the Punjab government has decided to introduce rental electric bikes (e-bikes) in Pakistan for the first time, with Lahore selected as the pilot city.
Under the first phase of the project, 10,000 e-bikes and 300 docking and charging stations will be established across the city. The initiative aims to provide residents with an affordable and convenient travel option between residential and commercial areas and nearby public transport stations.
According to a spokesperson for the Housing Department, the project will play a key role in promoting a modern “last-mile connectivity” system in Lahore. Citizens will be able to rent e-bikes within seconds through a dedicated mobile application.
Officials say the use of 10,000 e-bikes is expected to significantly reduce annual carbon emissions, ease traffic congestion, lower fuel consumption, and help improve air quality in the city.
The spokesperson added that the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) will provide space for docking and charging stations, while the Transport Department, Safe City Authority, and other relevant agencies will collaborate in implementing the project.
The initiative is being viewed as a major step toward sustainable and environmentally friendly urban mobility in Pakistan.
