WEBDESK – MediaBites News: Jailed Nobel laureate Narges Mohammadi suffers cardiac crisis in Iran, raising global alarm over her health and intensifying pressure on authorities for urgent medical intervention.
Iranian Nobel Peace Prize winner Narges Mohammadi has been rushed to the hospital after suffering a severe cardiac crisis in prison, triggering fresh global concern over her condition and treatment in custody.
According to a statement from her family’s foundation, the 53-year-old activist was transferred to a hospital in Zanjan after a “catastrophic deterioration” in her health, including a suspected heart attack and two episodes of complete unconsciousness.
Supporters said the emergency transfer came only after a second collapse, describing the response as dangerously delayed. Mohammadi had reportedly resisted earlier hospitalization due to fears about inadequate medical care.
Her lawyer, Mostafa Nili, said doctors are now focusing on neurological assessments alongside her serious heart condition, underscoring the complexity of her medical situation.
The Norwegian Nobel Committee has urged Iranian authorities to immediately move Mohammadi to a specialised medical facility in Tehran, warning that her survival depends on urgent and proper treatment.
Committee chair Jorgen Watne Frydnes said responsibility lies with Iranian authorities to ensure her life is not put at further risk.
Mohammadi, awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2023, has spent decades campaigning against capital punishment and compulsory dress laws in Iran. She has faced repeated arrests and prison sentences for her activism, and was most recently detained in December in Mashhad.
Her latest health crisis has intensified international calls for her release, as rights groups warn that delays in treatment could have life-threatening consequences.
