U.S. President Donald Trump joked Tuesday that his late mother once had a crush on a young King Charles III, delivering a light-hearted welcome speech as the British monarch began the second day of his state visit to the United States.
Speaking during a ceremonial arrival event at the White House, Trump said his mother admired the then-Prince Charles when he was younger, referring to the king as “cute Charles.” The remark drew laughter from guests attending the formal ceremony.
The event came ahead of Charles and Queen Camilla being welcomed before the king’s historic speech to a joint meeting of Congress later in the day.
Trump also joked about the weather and his own marriage during the remarks, adding a relaxed tone to the occasion on the South Lawn.
Charles is expected to use his address to Congress to stress unity between Britain and the United States, saying the two nations have repeatedly found ways to come together despite past disagreements.
The monarch is also expected to highlight the long-standing defense, intelligence, and security partnership between the allies, while calling for renewed cooperation on global conflicts.
The speech will mark only the second time a British monarch has addressed the U.S. Congress, following Queen Elizabeth II in 1991.
Later Tuesday, Charles and Camilla are scheduled to attend a state dinner hosted by Trump and Melania Trump at the White House, with political leaders, diplomats, and guests from both countries expected to attend.
The four-day visit is widely seen as an effort to reinforce the special relationship between Washington and London as the United States marks the 250th anniversary of its independence.
