A major crisis has erupted around the ICC T20 World Cup, threatening to upend the tournament’s credibility and expose deep fractures in global cricket governance, after Bangladesh pulled out and Pakistan signaled it may follow in protest.
The turmoil began after the International Cricket Council rejected Bangladesh’s request to relocate its World Cup matches away from India, citing security and logistical concerns. Following the rejection, Bangladesh formally withdrew from the tournament, triggering shockwaves across the cricketing world.
In a dramatic development, the ICC swiftly inducted Scotland into the T20 World Cup squads as Bangladesh’s replacement, a move that has intensified criticism and raised questions over fairness, process, and power dynamics within the sport.
Pakistan considers pulling out
Speaking at a press conference, Pakistan Cricket Board Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed that Pakistan is seriously considering withdrawing from the T20 World Cup in solidarity with Bangladesh.
“Pakistan stands with Bangladesh on matters of principle,” Naqvi said, adding that the PCB has conveyed its concerns to the ICC and is awaiting guidance from the federal government before taking a final decision.

Pressure on ICC and India’s central role
At the heart of the controversy is the ICC’s refusal to shift matches out of India, a decision critics say underscores India’s overwhelming influence within world cricket.
Analysts warn that if Pakistan also withdraws, the T20 World Cup could face a legitimacy crisis, exposing what many boards privately describe as an ICC structure heavily tilted toward Indian interests.
“This is no longer just about venues,” said a former international administrator. “It’s about whether the ICC can function as a neutral governing body or whether it has become hostage to one dominant stakeholder.”
Scotland steps in, but questions remain
Scotland’s induction has ensured the tournament can proceed on paper, but it has done little to calm tensions. Instead, it has fueled debate over whether smaller teams are being used as stopgap solutions to paper over deeper governance failures.
With Bangladesh already out and Pakistan’s participation hanging in the balance, the ICC now faces one of the most serious political challenges in recent World Cup history.

The PCB is expected to consult closely with the Pakistani government in the coming days. A final decision from Islamabad could determine whether the T20 World Cup proceeds as planned or descends into a crisis that reshapes global cricket power equations.
