Doctor Maryam Shaukat liver failure tragedy has left the Pakistani community in shock. The 27-year-old doctor from Pakistan had gone to the United States for residency. Sadly, she passed away in New Jersey just half an hour before her scheduled liver transplant surgery.
Doctor Maryam came to America with the dream of serving humanity and healing others. But life did not give her more time. Earlier this month, she was admitted to Rutgers University Hospital in New Jersey after her liver suddenly failed. Her condition worsened rapidly, and doctors advised an urgent liver transplant.
Her husband, Doctor Hamza Zafar, reached out to the Association of Physicians of Pakistani Descent of North America (APPNA) for help. APPNA immediately launched an emergency fundraising campaign. Nearly 400,000 dollars were collected for her treatment. In response to this extraordinary support, the hospital reduced the cost of transplant from 900,000 dollars to 450,000 dollars.
Doctor Maryam’s name was placed on the transplant list. A suitable liver match was found. But just thirty minutes before the surgery, her health declined suddenly. She could not survive and passed away.
The Pakistani community and APPNA members expressed deep grief over her death. They said her struggle and courage will always be remembered. Her dream to heal others will continue to live in people’s hearts.
