IMRAN MALIK — Seasoned German diplomat Ina Ruth Luise Lepel has officially resumed her role as Germany’s Ambassador to Pakistan, marking her second term in Islamabad. She presented her credentials to President Asif Ali Zardari earlier this week.
Sharing her message on X, Ambassador Lepel wrote:
“Today, I was honoured to hand over my credentials to H. E. the President of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Asif Ali Zardari. My goal during my tenure will be to strengthen Pak-German friendship & cooperation.”
Lepel, born in Cuxhaven, Germany, and holding master’s degrees in economics from Indiana University (USA) and University of Bonn (Germany), is one of the very few envoys to serve two separate terms in Pakistan.
Her diplomatic career spans multiple regions, including assignments in Bangkok, Tbilisi, New York (UN), and senior roles in Berlin. She earlier served as Deputy Head of Mission in Islamabad (2006–2009), Ambassador to Pakistan (2015–2017), Director-General for Asia and Pacific at the German Foreign Office (2017–2019), Ambassador to Japan (2019–2021), and Ambassador to Indonesia and Timor-Leste (2021–2025).
Diplomatic observers note that her return reflects Berlin’s intent to deepen engagement with Pakistan, particularly in areas of trade, climate, education, and cultural exchange.
Her reappointment is expected to bring a sense of continuity and renewed momentum to Pak-German relations at a time when Islamabad seeks to expand its international partnerships.
