Every year on May 28, Pakistan celebrates Youm-e-Takbeer (The Day of Greatness). This important day remembers the moment in 1998 when Pakistan became a nuclear power and showed the world that it could protect itself.
What Happened on May 28, 1998?
On this day, Pakistan carried out five underground nuclear tests in Chagai, a district in Balochistan. These tests were done in response to India’s nuclear tests earlier that same month. Pakistan named its tests Chagai-I.
After these tests, Pakistan became the seventh nuclear power in the world, and the first Muslim country to have nuclear weapons.
A Big Step for Defence
Even though many countries like the United States and Japan were unhappy and placed sanctions on Pakistan, the people of Pakistan saw this as a big step for the country’s safety.
The tests helped balance power in South Asia and made sure Pakistan could protect itself if needed. That is why Youm-e-Takbeer is a day of pride for the nation.
Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan: The Man Behind the Mission
The success of the nuclear tests is mostly credited to Dr Abdul Qadeer Khan, a well-known Pakistani scientist. He is respected and remembered for making Pakistan strong through science and technology.
Why Is Youm-e-Takbeer Still Important Today?
In 2025, this day marks the 27th anniversary of the nuclear tests. This year, it is even more meaningful because Pakistan’s military recently completed a successful mission called “Operation Bunyan-um-Marsoos”, in response to unprovoked attacks by India.
This shows that Pakistan is still strong and ready to defend its people.
