In a significant political shift, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has reclaimed power in Delhi after 27 years, securing 48 out of 70 seats in the 2025 Legislative Assembly elections. This victory marks a dramatic turnaround from the 2020 elections, where the BJP held only 8 seats.
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Arvind Kejriwal, experienced a substantial decline, winning just 22 seats compared to their previous tally of 62 while BJP snatched 48. The Indian National Congress failed to secure any seats for the third consecutive election.
This landslide victory marks a significant shift from the 2020 elections, where the BJP won only 8 seats, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), led by Arvind Kejriwal, dominated with 62 seats. However, in a dramatic reversal, AAP’s tally has now plunged to just 22 seats, signaling a sharp decline in voter confidence.
One of the biggest upsets came in the New Delhi constituency, where BJP’s Parvesh Verma defeated sitting Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, who had held the seat since 2013. Kejriwal’s loss is widely attributed to corruption allegations, the ‘Sheesh Mahal’ controversy, and governance concerns that have dented his once-strong political standing.
Several factors contributed to AAP’s electoral decline. Analysts point to early and strategic campaigning by the BJP, which effectively targeted middle-class voters. The BJP also highlighted alleged irregularities in AAP’s welfare schemes and capitalized on a perceived decline in Kejriwal’s public image.
Issues such as inadequate infrastructure and persistent pollution in the capital further eroded public confidence in AAP’s governance.
In contrast, the BJP’s promises to improve education and healthcare services resonated with voters, contributing to their decisive victory. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed gratitude to the electorate, pledging to focus on the development of Delhi and enhancing the quality of life for its residents.
This election outcome not only reshapes Delhi’s political landscape but also serves as a significant boost for the BJP following previous electoral setbacks. The party’s return to power in the capital is seen as a reaffirmation of public confidence in its vision for progress and governance.
