A Texas college student, Alison Pickering, tragically passed away just days before her graduation after eating a meal on a first date. The 23-year-old girl had a severe peanut allergy, which she had managed carefully throughout her life. On May 4, 2023, she ordered the mahi-mahi at Newton’s Saddlerack, a dish she had enjoyed before, unaware that the recipe had changed to include peanut sauce.
According to the report of Daily Mail , after taking a few bites, student Alison realized something was wrong and immediately used her EpiPen. Though she walked to the ambulance talking, her condition worsened, and she passed away before reaching the hospital. Alison’s parents, Grover and Joy Pickering, are now on a mission to raise awareness about the need for better allergy transparency in restaurants. They are calling for clear labeling of allergens like peanuts, which they believe could save lives.
The Pickerings are also advocating for comprehensive allergy training for restaurant staff and better communication about ingredients. Their heartbreaking loss, just days before Alison’s graduation, has left them determined to ensure that no other family experiences such tragedy.
While the owner of Newton’s Saddlerack disputes the claim that staff were unaware of the recipe change, he has refrained from commenting due to pending litigation.
