In 2023, 85,000 women and girls were intentionally killed worldwide, with 60% (51,000) of these killed by life partners or family members. This means that in 24 hours, 140 women and girls lose their lives at the hands of someone close to them, one woman or girl every 10 minutes.
According to Daily Dawn, the report, “Femicides in 2023: Global Estimates of Intimate Partner/Family Member Femicides,” was jointly produced by UN Women and the UN Office for Drug and Crime, marking the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women.
According to exclusive report, Africa recorded the highest number of family member femicides, with 21,700 victims in 2023. Despite differences across regions, intimate partner or family member femicides remain a global issue, affecting all regions. In Europe and the Americas, over half of femicides are committed by intimate partners, with 64 percent in Europe and 58% in the Americas.
While men make up the majority of homicide victims globally (80 percent), women are disproportionately affected by family violence. As per report, almost60% of all women killed in 2023 were victims of intimate partner or family member violence. In contrast, only 12% of male homicides were caused by intimate partners or family members. This report points out the need to address violence in the domestic sphere to protect women and girls globally.
