Sheikh Hasina Wajid, who previously served as the Prime Minister of Bangladesh, has alleged that the United States played a pivotal role in orchestrating the downfall of her administration following her resignation on August 5, amidst violent demonstrations against the student quota system.
Following her resignation, Sheikh Hasina sought refuge in India, where she has since emerged from her seclusion, attributing her ouster to American interests in the Bay of Bengal.
According to reports from Indian media, Sheikh Hasina has accused the United States of pursuing dominance over the Bay of Bengal and seeking control over the strategic island of St. Martin.
She has asserted that her refusal to cede sovereignty over the island was a direct cause of her government’s downfall. “I resigned to avert further casualties among students and citizens,” she declared.
The aftermath of Sheikh Hasina’s departure has witnessed a severe crackdown on her supporters, with relentless efforts to oust them from positions of authority within the state.
Just recently, student demonstrations led to the resignation of six political judges, including the Chief Justice, following their encirclement of the Supreme Court.
Sharing her dismay over the treatment of her party members and supporters, Sheikh Hasina has expressed her intention to return to Bangladesh in the near future. She has refuted allegations of inciting violence against students, stating that her statements were misunderstood.
Following Sheikh Hasina’s departure, an interim government, led by Nobel laureate Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has assumed governance in Bangladesh.
