US President Donald Trump stunned the UN General Assembly with a fiery speech, blasting climate change, immigration policies, and world leaders — sparking global backlash and reigniting debates on America’s role.
WEBDESK – UNITED NATIONS — In a blistering and unapologetic speech before the UN General Assembly, US President Donald Trump told world leaders that their nations were “going to hell” because of failed immigration policies and what he described as the “con job” of climate change.
The 56-minute address marked a return to Trump’s combative style on the global stage. Casting himself as a peacemaker who had “ended seven wars,” Trump accused the United Nations of failing to support his conflict-resolution efforts. “What is the purpose of the United Nations? All they do is write strongly worded letters. Empty words don’t solve wars. Only action does,” he said.
The president lashed out at Europe’s immigration policies, offering his own crackdown as a “model” for others. “Immigration and their suicidal energy ideas will be the death of Western Europe,” Trump warned, while boasting that America had “unleashed” fossil fuel production. Wind and solar, he declared, were a “joke” and “too expensive to work.”
Trump mocked NATO allies for continuing to purchase Russian oil, saying, “They’re funding the war against themselves.” He also threatened sweeping tariffs if Moscow refused to negotiate peace.
Even moments of levity carried his trademark sting: Trump joked about a stalled escalator and a malfunctioning teleprompter, quipping, “These are the two things I got from the United Nations — a bad escalator and a bad teleprompter.”
Scientists and climate advocates condemned the remarks. Rachel Cleetus of the Union of Concerned Scientists said Trump was spreading “dangerous disinformation,” warning that climate change was “costly, real, and deadly — not a joke.”
European leaders also reacted sharply. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said Trump’s dismissal of renewable energy was “reckless” at a time when Europe was racing to cut dependence on fossil fuels. French President Emmanuel Macron cautioned that Trump’s rhetoric risked undermining global cooperation: “If the United States abandons the fight against climate change, the whole world suffers.”
Immigration rights groups in Europe and the US accused Trump of stoking fear for political gain. Amnesty International said his remarks about migrants reflected “a dangerous populism that dehumanizes vulnerable people.”
Despite later telling UN Secretary-General António Guterres that the US was “100% behind the UN,” Trump’s fiery speech underscored his deep skepticism of the institution — and his determination to reshape global debates on America’s terms.
