CM of province Punjab Maryam Nawaz recently dismissed rumors that she has cancer, clarifying that she instead has a parathyroid condition requiring specialized treatment available only in the U.S. and Switzerland. During a discussion with party members in London, Maryam addressed social media speculation, stating that misleading claims about her health and treatment abroad are unfounded.
She explained that her medical care generally takes place in Pakistan, but her specific condition parathyroid diseasedemands a complex procedure not widely available. According to Maryam, only two countries currently offer the advanced surgical techniques she needs, leading her to undergo surgery in Switzerland in early 2023.
According to Geo News, Dr. Mateen Hotiana, an endocrinology expert from West Virginia University, further explained the condition. He noted that parathyroid glands, located behind the thyroid, regulate the body’s calcium levels. When one of these glands becomes overactive, it releases excessive hormones, extracting calcium from the bones and raising blood calcium levels, which can pose serious health risks.
Some doctors in Pakistan confirmed that standard parathyroid treatments, including medications and surgery, are available in major cities. However, Dr. Hotiana pointed out that the most advanced techniques, such as minimally invasive surgery (MIS), are not yet offered in Pakistan. These cutting-edge treatments are accessible only in a few countries, including the U.S., which limits options for those needing specialized care.
Maryam emphasized that she does not usually discuss her personal health but chose to address the rumors to provide clarity.
