Emma Watson, renowned for her iconic portrayal of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter film series, has ignited speculation about a budding romance after she was seen enjoying a lunch date with filmmaker Hassan Akkad, a Syrian refugee.
Emma Watson and Hassan exuded happiness as they departed their Mayfair lunch spot. Hassan Akkad, who undertook a harrowing 87-day journey across Europe and arrived in the UK as a Syrian refugee by dinghy in 2015, gained recognition by winning a Bafta award for his documentary series “Exodus: Our Journey to Europe” on BBC2 in 2017.
An observer, as reported by the Daily Mail, described the couple’s outing as “cozy.” Both were casually dressed, with Hassan donning a black sweatshirt and black shorts, while Emma was similarly clad in a sweatshirt and black trousers. Notably, Hassan was seen carrying Emma Watson’s water bottle as they left the restaurant.
Despite their evident closeness, Hassan modestly declared in an interview with the Daily Mail that the 33-year-old actress was “out of his league.”

Emma and Hassan have shared a strong friendship since 2017. In his memoir, “Hope Not Fear,” Hassan recounted their bond, noting, “We have a shared passion for photography and films, and we would typically spend time at her house to avoid the limelight.”
Prior to this, Emma Watson had been in a relationship with Californian businessman Leo Robinton for two years, and her most recent romantic involvement was with Brandon Green, the son of Sir Philip Green, which ended earlier in the year 2023.
