A devastating mid-air collision between an American Airlines passenger jet and a military helicopter near Reagan Washington National Airport has sent shockwaves across the nation leaving 67 people dead and many more questions unanswered. The crash has raised serious concerns about air safety and staffing shortages at the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has launched an investigation into the crash and has recovered the helicopter’s black box which contains crucial flight data and cockpit voices. The NTSB has also conducted interviews with air traffic controllers including the lone controller working at Reagan’s tower during the crash.
According to investigators the helicopter was flying at an altitude of around 300 feet despite being cleared to fly at a maximum altitude of 200 feet. The FAA has restricted helicopter flights near Reagan National Airport to reduce the risk of another collision. These restrictions will last at least until the NTSB releases a preliminary report which typically takes 30 days.
The agency has also come under fire for staffing shortages with the FAA currently operating with 3000 fewer controllers than needed. Senator Maria Cantwell has questioned the safety of flights separated by as little as 350 feet vertically and horizontally.
Radio communications revealed that air traffic controllers alerted the helicopter about the approaching jet and ordered it to change course but it remains unclear why the helicopter failed to respond.
As investigators continue to piece together the events leading up to the crash the nation is left to mourn the loss of 67 innocent lives. The crash serves as a stark reminder of the importance of air safety and the need for vigilance in preventing such tragedies from occurring in the future.
