    Utility Stores Corporation closure: Government’s big step towards ending poor people of Pakistan

    Utility Stores Corporation closure has been officially approved by the federal cabinet, ending decades of government-subsidized outlets across Pakistan. The Utility Stores Corporation closure also means that over 17,000 employees will lose their jobs.

    On Friday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a federal cabinet meeting in Islamabad where the decision was finalized on the recommendation of the Ministry of Commerce. The cabinet directed that employees’ rights must be protected and all legal requirements fulfilled with transparency.

    Utility Stores Corporation was established in 1971 to provide affordable food items to low-income families. Initially, only 20 outlets were opened, but over the years, the network expanded to more than 4,000 stores nationwide. For many poor families, these stores were a major source of relief. Now, with the Utility Stores Corporation closure, that chapter has come to an end.

    The audit report for 2024-25 revealed major irregularities that exposed why the corporation was shut down. Billions of rupees were lost due to poor-quality wheat purchases, illegal subsidies, fraudulent claims, and mismanagement in sugar buying. Losses crossed more than 28 billion rupees. Fraud by employees, purchases from closed flour mills, and subsidies distributed without verification added to the damage.

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed concern over mismanagement but assured that during the dissolution process, workers’ rights will be safeguarded. He also ordered strict measures to prevent such financial mismanagement in the future.

    This decision is seen as a turning point. While the closure ends decades of affordable goods distribution, the government insists reforms and new measures will ensure transparency and better solutions for low-income families.
