Whether on a run or seeking convenience, managing messages is at your wrist’s command. This rollout, which began in July 2023, marks a significant stride for Meta-owned WhatsApp, catering to a specific segment of their vast monthly active user base.
To access WhatsApp on your smartwatch, ensure it’s running Wear OS 3 or a later iteration. Install the app on your Android phone via the Play Store and ensure its presence on your watch. Notably, Wear OS app versions on your phone don’t automatically sync with your watch.
Here’s a step-by-step guide for WhatsApp installation on your watch:
Activate your watch by pressing the Power button and access the Play Store.
Choose “Apps on your phone.”
Locate WhatsApp and tap “Install.”
With your phone and watch connected, open WhatsApp on both devices.
Your watch will display an eight-character code. Input this code on the pairing prompt visible on your phone.
Upon launch, your recent conversations will appear. Select any conversation to enter the chat thread.
Response options at the bottom include tapping the microphone icon for a voice message or the keyboard icon for Wear OS’s built-in input.
This enables virtual keyboard use, emoji insertion, Google’s voice-to-text feature, or quick replies from available choices.

But What About WhatsApp on Apple Watch?
While Android users benefit from the Wear OS app, Apple Watch still lacks an official WhatsApp app. Despite similarities between the platforms, no forthcoming Apple Watch app is evident. Even if developed, the process might entail a wait. Apple Watch users await this addition with anticipation.
Meanwhile, Android and Wear OS users gain an edge in WhatsApp functionality over Apple’s ecosystem. Despite iMessage absence, these users enjoy a more extensive WhatsApp experience.
Coincidentally, this development aligns with Adam Mosseri, head of Meta’s Instagram, praising Android as a superior mobile operating system to iOS.
