President Donald Trump signed several executive actions to transform the federal government on the first day of his second term. These actions included withdrawing the US from the Paris Climate Agreement, freezing federal hiring, and requiring federal workers to return to the office. Trump also pardoned those charged with crimes related to the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack, delayed the TikTok ban, and initiated changes to the American immigration system.
Trump‘s actions on January 6 pardons included full pardons for approximately 1,500 individuals charged in connection with the Capitol attack, including high-profile leaders of the Proud Boys and Oath Keepers. He also extended the deadline for TikTok’s parent company to find a new owner by 75 days, delaying the ban.
Additionally, Trump rescinded 78 Biden-era executive actions, including those related to sex discrimination, ethics pledges, transgender military service, and private prison contracts. He also revoked actions that removed Cuba from the terror list, applied sanctions on Jewish settlers in the West Bank, and aimed to regulate artificial intelligence.
On immigration, Trump declared a national emergency on the southern border, ending the use of an app for migrants to notify US Customs and Border Protection of their intent to enter the US. He also signed an order to redefine birthright citizenship and declared two major drug cartels as terrorist organizations.
Finally, Trump announced the US withdrawal from the World Health Organization, citing its mishandling of the COVID-19 pandemic and other global health crises.
