Former US president Donald Trump has said he will speak to tech billionaire Elon Musk about the possibility of restoring internet access in Iran, as nationwide protests continue and reports of mounting deaths draw international concern.
Speaking to reporters, Trump said access to information was critical as Iranians face widespread internet shutdowns imposed by authorities to curb unrest. Iran has repeatedly restricted connectivity during periods of protest, limiting communication and the flow of images and videos to the outside world.
Meanwhile, a rights group has reported that the death toll from the ongoing protests has crossed 500, with hundreds more injured or detained. The demonstrations, sparked by public anger over political repression and economic hardship, have spread across multiple cities despite heavy security crackdowns.
As protests expand, Reza Pahlavi, the son of Iran’s toppled shah, has emerged more prominently on the international stage, saying he is willing to play a role in a potential democratic transition. While he has stopped short of calling for a return to monarchy, Pahlavi has urged world powers to support the Iranian people rather than engage with what he calls a failing regime.
In Washington, debate continues over how the United States should respond. Several US senators have expressed skepticism about military options against Iran, warning that any direct intervention could trigger a wider regional conflict. Lawmakers from both parties have instead emphasized diplomatic pressure, sanctions, and support for human rights.
With protests showing no sign of slowing and global scrutiny intensifying, Iran’s internal crisis is increasingly intersecting with international politics, technology, and questions over the limits of foreign intervention.
