Shehzadi Rai, a transgender rights activist and member of Gender Interactive Alliance, was sworn in as a member of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC) city council, occupying one of the seats reserved for transgender individuals. She was nominated for this position through the transgender quota by the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP).
This historic moment marks the first official representation of the transgender community in the council since the time of colonial rule prior to the Partition of 1947.
