A dramatic and lesser-known chapter from Pakistan’s film history has resurfaced, as veteran writer Nasir Adeeb recounts how a shocking “song deception” led to the unexpected marriage—and fiery split—between Malika-e-Tarannum Noor Jehan and actor Yousuf Khan.
According to Adeeb, the controversy began when filmmaker Younis Malik allegedly tricked Noor Jehan into recording a song under the pretense that it would be picturized on actress Anjuman. However, the song was instead intended for another actress, Firdous.
When Noor Jehan discovered the deception, she was reportedly furious and sent a stern message warning Malik to prepare for consequences. In a bid to defuse the situation, Malik turned to Yousuf Khan, requesting him to personally visit Noor Jehan and persuade her to forgive and continue the film’s remaining songs.
What followed was a twist few could have imagined.
When Yousuf Khan arrived at Noor Jehan’s residence in Lahore’s Gulberg, the meeting took an unexpected turn. Not only did Noor Jehan agree to forgive Malik, but she also expressed admiration for Yousuf Khan—and proposed marriage.
In a move that stunned the film industry, the two reportedly tied the knot the very next day.
However, the fairytale was short-lived.
Adeeb claims that Yousuf Khan later became involved with another woman, a development that did not escape Noor Jehan’s notice. The situation reached a dramatic climax when, upon his return home one day, Noor Jehan allegedly refused to let him enter, confronting him at the gate and ending the relationship in anger.
The fallout, according to the account, proved devastating. Yousuf Khan’s career declined, and the relationship that had caused the rift did not last either.
The story, rich with emotion, betrayal, and stardom, has once again captured public attention—offering a glimpse into the intense personal lives behind Pakistan’s golden era of cinema.
