Amanda Anisimova delivered one of the biggest upsets of the US Open on Wednesday, avenging her Wimbledon humiliation with a straight-sets victory over Poland’s Iga Swiatek to storm into the semifinals.
Backed by a roaring Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd, the American stunned the six-time Grand Slam champion 6-4, 6-3. Just two months ago, Swiatek had crushed Anisimova 6-0, 6-0 in the Wimbledon final — a defeat the 24-year-old called the toughest of her career.
This time, Anisimova flipped the script. After trading early breaks, she claimed the first set when Swiatek’s forehand drifted long. The Polish star started the second set stronger, racing to a 2-0 lead, but the eighth seed rallied with the crowd chanting “We love you, Amanda,” breaking back and seizing momentum.
Swiatek, rattled by errors and a costly double fault late in the match, failed to recover. Anisimova sealed victory on her third match point when a net cord ball left Swiatek helpless.
“Today was definitely different than any other match I’ve played,” Anisimova said. “I really focused on my mindset in the last 24 hours. This feels surreal — the most meaningful victory of my life.”
Swiatek admitted she expected a tougher contest than Wimbledon. “Amanda can play great tennis. She moved better, played better — everything was different,” the world No. 2 said.
The win marked Anisimova’s second career triumph over a Top 2 player. She also became the first American woman since Venus and Serena Williams in 2022 to reach the semifinals on all three Grand Slam surfaces.
Next, Anisimova will face Naomi Osaka, who defeated Karolina Muchova in the night session.
