In a significant move toward promoting renewable energy, the Sindh government has announced a solar panel scheme at subsidized rates for both farmers and low-consumption households. The initiative aims to lower energy costs, reduce dependence on traditional power sources, and encourage sustainable practices across the province.
Solar Panels for Farmers at Subsidized Rates
Sindh’s Minister for Agriculture, Anti-Corruption, and Sports, Sardar Muhammad Bux Khan Mahar, revealed that small and medium-scale farmers owning 5 to 25 acres of agricultural land are eligible to apply.
Under the scheme:
-
295 solar units will be installed across 4,000 acres of farmland.
-
Farmers will pay only 20% of the cost, while the government will bear the remaining 80%.
-
Applications must be submitted by September 20 at the Director General Agriculture Office, Hyderabad.
Officials believe this project will help farmers combat rising electricity and diesel costs while ensuring uninterrupted power supply for tube wells and irrigation systems. By shifting to renewable sources, the province also aims to cut carbon emissions linked with traditional energy use in agriculture.
Solar Panels for Low-Income Households
Parallel to the farmers’ program, the Sindh government has rolled out a free solar panel initiative for low-income families. This program targets households consuming up to 100 electricity units per month.
According to official data presented in the provincial assembly:
-
200,000 families will benefit from the scheme.
-
77,000 homes have already received solar panels.
-
The remaining 123,000 households will receive panels in the upcoming distribution phase.
-
If applications exceed the target, a lottery mechanism will decide the winners.
Applications Still Open
The Sindh Energy Department is continuing to accept applications from eligible families. Interested households meeting the electricity usage requirement are encouraged to apply before the deadline.
For farmers, the cut-off date of September 20 is crucial, as only those submitting applications by then will qualify for subsidized solar units.
Sustainable Energy Push in Sindh
These solar panel initiatives underscore Sindh’s commitment to sustainable energy. Agriculture experts note that reducing farmers’ dependence on costly fuels can improve crop yields and stabilize farming expenses. At the same time, extending free solar systems to low-income households can ease the burden of high electricity bills and support equitable energy access.
With these dual efforts, Sindh positions itself as a pioneer in renewable energy adoption at both the agricultural and domestic levels, setting a model for other provinces in Pakistan.
