Sardar Tanveer Ilyas, the incumbent prime minister of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK), has made history by becoming the first prime minister to be disqualified for contempt of court. The AJK High Court, in a ruling on Tuesday, removed Ilyas from his position after he was called before both the Supreme Court and the AJK High Court for his use of a “threatening tone” in one of his remarks.
During the hearing, which was conducted by a full bench under the direction of Judge Sadaqat Hussain Raja, videos of the prime minister’s statements were aired. Ilyas expressed regret to the court, stating, “I regret wholeheartedly if any of my statements have wounded the judge.”
Prior to appearing in court, Ilyas had received support from members of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), his political party. However, the high court’s ruling has dealt a severe blow to the PTI, as Ilyas has now been disqualified from his position as prime minister due to contempt of court charges. This marks a significant development in the political landscape of AJK.
