Digital Telescopes Used for Crescent Observation
According to officials the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission SUPARCO used digital telescopes nationwide to aid in crescent observation. These telescopes were linked via video in Peshawar to help experts observe the moon.
Cloudy Conditions Reduce Likelihood of Spotting Moon
However cloudy conditions in several cities including Islamabad Lahore and Quetta reduced the likelihood of spotting the moon. Experts explained that the moon should be at least 19 hours old for visibility but at sunset on February 28 its age in Karachi was only 12 hours.
Final Announcement Expected Soon
Speaking on the occasion Maulana Abdul Khabir Azad stated that the committee was in contact with witnesses across the country and would make a final announcement based on testimonies and meteorological reports. The official announcement regarding the beginning of Ramadan is expected soon after the committee reviews all moon sighting reports.
