The sudden absence of senior journalist Nasim Zehra from her regular programme on Channel 24 on Friday has triggered widespread speculation and concern within journalistic and political circles.
Viewers noticed that Nasim Zehra did not appear on air for her scheduled show, prompting questions on social media about whether the programme had been suspended and, if so, under what circumstances. No official explanation was immediately issued by Channel 24, fueling debate over whether the journalist had been taken off air due to external pressure.
Several journalists, including Hamid Mir, said Nasim Zehra’s absence from Channel 24 was alarming and demanded an immediate explanation. They said any allegation against a senior journalist must be addressed through a formal charge sheet, not an unexplained on-air ban, warning that such actions only deepen concerns over press freedom and due process.

Who is Nasim Zehra?

Known for her in-depth political analysis and hard-hitting interviews, Zehra has also authored books on Pakistan’s civil-military relations and foreign policy, earning recognition for her research-based approach to journalism. Over the years, she has developed a reputation for independence and critical inquiry, particularly on issues related to governance, security and democracy.
As of Friday evening, neither Channel 24 nor Nasim Zehra had issued a detailed public statement explaining her absence. Media bodies and press freedom advocates have urged the channel to clarify its position, warning that the removal of another senior journalist from television without due process could further erode public trust in Pakistan’s media landscape.
