A resolution proposing a ban on dance and entertainment at wedding celebrations was presented in the Punjab Assembly, sparking debate among members. The resolution highlighted an increase in what it termed “Mujra Performances” at weddings, which are often streamed on social media and allegedly lead to immoral behavior. Concerns were raised regarding the mistreatment of performers, particularly transgender individuals, who face harassment and exploitation in these settings.
While some assembly members supported the resolution as a measure to uphold cultural values and protect human rights, others voiced opposition. MPA Uzma Kardar argued against the proposal, asserting that it could restrict cultural celebrations and limit personal freedoms. Kardar stressed that dance and entertainment are integral to wedding festivities in Pakistan, and prohibiting them would affect people’s ability to celebrate important life events.
During the session, the Speaker of the Assembly underscored that conversations around cultural norms and decency often become contentious when marginalized communities, such as transgender individuals, are involved. The Assembly agreed to urge the government to consider a ban and explore stronger legal measures to curb inappropriate activities while ensuring that human rights are respected.
The resolution has now been forwarded to a committee for further discussion, aiming to find a balanced approach that respects both cultural traditions and individual rights.
